When we started our trip planning, Scotland was on our wish list, but didn’t seem feasible if we wanted to spend most of our time in the Alps. Now it’s our first stop. Everyone we talked to loves Scotland, and raves about the charming cities and accessible hiking. We made sure to include the West Highland Way in our hiking itinerary, as well Edinburgh and Glasgow, two cities we can’t stop hearing good things about. Here is a preview of our trip, with some tips about hiking the West Highland Way and what we expect to do!
First Stop: Scotland and the West Highland Way | April, 2019
In early April, we will be flying into Edinburgh, UK. Aaron and I will spend a few days exploring the historic city and adjusting to European time zones before heading out to Glasgow. Glasgow will become our “home base” for April, serving the the jumping off points for our first two trails: The West Highland Way and the Lake District.
Currently, we plan on tackling the West Highland Way first, as it’s one of the most famous hikes in Europe, and is known for it’s gorgeous scenery as well as it’s easy slopes and tame climbs. It seems like the perfect trail to start our journey, a way to warm up and get ready for the more strenuous hikes of the Alps.
The trail is a 96 mile (154 km) hike that stretches from just outside Glasgow to Fort William in Scotland. It is easily one of the most accessible trails on our adventure, with hostels, towns, and taverns dotting the tail the whole way. We could stop at the local pub every night for a beer and hot meal if we wanted (or if we had the money). However, we plan to take advantage of Scotland’s Wild Camping laws, and pitch our tent as much as possible. TMBtent has a great guide to camping on the West Highland Way that we suggest you check out. While camping is cheap, it also allows us to get the know the scenery and landscape of Scotland, which is the whole point of this trip!
Once we reach Fort William (about 7-9 days after leaving Glasgow), I will force Aaron to take a train over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, know for it’s Harry Potter majesty. We could also take a train to Loch Ness, but right now it’s not on our “Must Do” list, as it seems a little touristy and is a bit out of our way.
The Lake District and Glasgow | April 2019
From Ft. William, we will take a train back down to Glasgow. We plan on spending a couple of nights in Glasgow to recover from our walk and take some time to explore the historic city. We will take in the sights at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and Glasgow Cathedral, walk along the River Clyde, and get lost in the tangle of streets and history.
After our legs rest up, we will take a train from Glasgow to Kendal, where we will then head out into the Lake District for some hiking, camping and sightseeing. Throughout the Lake District there are a series of hikes to check out, from Borger Dalr, Borrowdale to Greendale and Middle Fell, Western Fells, there’s plenty to do. Based on weather and how much time we have, many of the hikes we do in the Lake District will be game-time decisions.
Back to Edinburgh and off to Croatia | Late April 2019
The final leg of our UK tour will take us back to Edinburgh for a couple of nights as we prepare to fly to our next stop: Croatia. In Edinburgh we plan on hitting up many of the famous sites, including Edinburgh Castle, hiking Calton Hill and Arthur’s Seat, and taking in some of the great architecture. We will of course find some whiskey distilleries, and hit up some famous LGBT destinations throughout the city.
From Edinburgh, we plan on flying across Europe and Schengen Region, to Croatia, where we plan to spend a couple weeks hiking and enjoying the beaches and islands of this wonderful country.
